The steel industry is undergoing a significant digital transformation, with a renewed focus on sustainability and efficiency. In this context, the SILICON EYE project, developed by a consortium of companies including Celsa Group, MAPSI Photonics, and bcb Informática y Control, is revolutionizing process monitoring through the use of advanced thermal imaging cameras.
Steel Production in Spain and Industry 4.0
In 2021, steel production in Spain grew by 27.6%, reaching 14.2 million tons, making the national industry the third-largest in the European Union by production volume. This growth underscores the need to implement advanced technological solutions to maintain and improve competitiveness at the European level.
Innovation and Sustainability in the SILICON EYE Project
SILICON EYE’s main objective is to develop a monitoring system for Steelmor’s steelmaking processes using high-quality photodetector thermal imaging cameras with tunable neutral density filters. This technology allows for precise and rapid detection of process conditions, facilitating immediate diagnosis and correction of manufacturing defects.
Advantages of Real-Time Monitoring
The thermal imaging camera system provides a comprehensive view of the industrial process, overcoming the limitations of traditional sensors that only collect data at specific points. With this technology, it is possible to:
• Detectar niveles de llenado y paso de escoria
• Supervise furnace and transformer temperature
• Control the alignment and dimension of billets
• Trace products continuously using Machine Learning
Collaboration and Funding
This project is a collaboration between CELSA GROUP, MAPSI Photonics, and bcb, coordinated by SECPHOas a Deep Tech cluster. It has been funded by Next Generation EU funds, channeled through the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, within the support program for Innovative Business Groups, aimed at digitizing the industry.
Impact and Future
The success of the SILICON EYE project will not only improve the quality and efficiency of steel production but also reduce energy consumption and emissions, significantly contributing to the sustainability of the steel industry. bcb, with its expertise in thermography, plays a crucial role in this technological advancement, once again demonstrating its commitment to innovation and excellence.
