Wood and Paper

These industries have been highly demanded in recent years due to the growing demand and environmental regulations, which in turn ask to offer the usual quality with friendlier and cheaper materials. In this context, productive efficiency is essential and both process control and supervision of critical equipment are key to achieving it.

The bcbMonitor 4.0 is fully adaptable to control lamination, drying processes, blanket formation, detection of surface defects, and application of adhesives and coatings. Likewise, the bcbFireScan guarantees the security of the facilities through the early detection of fires. The stability and precision of the measurement is obtained thanks to the use of FLIR thermal imaging cameras.

The raw material is usually mostly natural fibers with high moisture content, either from harvesting or as part of the production process. Drying processes are very common for the same reason, whether by natural methods such as sun exposure or forced methods such as baking or spinning.

In these processes, thermography can be used to verify in real time the correct execution of the process and that all the material is covered in a uniform way. It is also possible to detect upstream problems, as with the application of the fast Fourier transform from the thermographic reading.

This process has different purposes in both industries, but is highly relevant in both. So much so that pressing is the backbone of the board process where a mixture of fibers with 85% wood is compacted. In the case of paper, pressing does the function of removing most of the water contained in the pulp.

In the compaction of wood, an adequate temperature control is required, which by traditional methods is difficult to measure. With the bcbMonitor 4.0 a continuous, reliable and non-contact reading of the edge of the plate is integrated into a central processing, alarm and process control. And regarding the paper process, the bcbMonitor 4.0 allows evaluating the condition of the pulp after pressing to check that the moisture has been adequately and uniformly removed.

The raw material is ground very finely, to the degree that it becomes fiber. A small percentage of synthetic materials is added, which will be sent to a press to be compacted, but previously they must form a uniform blanket that must maintain the greatest possible humidity and temperature homogeneity.

The bcbMonitor 4.0 system is capable of measuring the entire mat formation area, covering resolutions of the order of millimeters. Any anomaly is alerted or there is the possibility of regulating the process parameters based on the thermographic readings carried out by the system. With the bcbFireScan system, any natural or provoked rise in temperature can be detected, avoiding the ever-present risk of fire that this material has.

  • Continuous and unattended monitoring of temperatures throughout the blanket of sawdust and glue.
  • Prevent the combustible distance of the pharmacy in the blanket.

Once the plate is obtained, it undergoes treatments that aim to beautify the piece and make it safe for common use (without splinters). Sanding and finishing processes have this purpose. However, in these processes defects can appear in the product due to poor adjustment or misadjustment of the machine. Detecting the defects is difficult and if they are not quite visible, such as burns, porosities and other discontinuities.

In addition, in these processes, friction always presents the risk of generating a spark and in an industry where materials are handled with the risk of easily igniting represents a danger. For the optimization of the process, it is recommended to use the thermographic monitoring offered by the bcbMonitor 4.0 and for the detection of fire outbreaks the bcbFireScan is available.

  • Continuous analysis of repeatability of temperatures in different boards.
  • Scanning for the detection of burns in melamine.
  • Detection of imperfections and roughness after sanding.

Working with combustible materials is always a risk and with wood and paper is no exception. In the words of our customers: “once the material is turned on, you no longer turn it off” The key to preventing these catastrophes is in the early detection of combustion, which can be caused by chemical reactions, high ambient temperatures, the magnifying glass effect or even negligence of staff.

Thermography anticipates smoke detectors and CCTV systems by at least 2 minutes, allowing fire to be attacked at a stage where it can be extinguished very easily. The bcbFireScan system integrates FLIR cameras to serve that purpose. Its friendly interface coupled with connectivity with the plant’s alarm and extinguishing system make it a reliable and easy-to-operate monitoring tool. It also has detection of false positives in the face of reflections or forklift traffic.
